2-Iodomelatonin is a potent agonist of MEL-1(melatonin receptors) with higher affinity than Melatonin (sc-207848) itself (30-fold more potent in CHO cells). 2-Iodomelatonin has been utilized for this strong agonist activity in probing and elucidating the behaviors of the melatonin MEL-1A-R, MEL-1B-R, and MT3 receptors. 2-[125I]-iodomelatonin is a useful radiolabel tool for identifying, characterizing, and localizing melatonin binding sites. In addition, this compound modulates the activity of various enzymes, such as nitric oxide synthase and cyclooxygenase, as well as various hormones, such as serotonin and melatonin. Studies have found antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, neuroprotective, cardioprotective, and hepatoprotective activities of 2-Iodomelatonin.
