2-Ethyl-2-hydroxybutyric acid (2-EHB) is a notable four-carbon organic acid. This chiral molecule exists in two forms, known as enantiomers, namely (R)-2-Ethyl-2-hydroxybutyric acid and (S)-2-Ethyl-2-hydroxybutyric acid. Of these, the (R)-enantiomer is biologically active and exhibits several advantageous properties. Although the exact mechanism of action of (R)-2-Ethyl-2-hydroxybutyric acid is not yet fully elucidated, it is believed to activate the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway, a regulator of cellular energy metabolism. Furthermore, (R)-2-Ethyl-2-hydroxybutyric acid has demonstrated inhibitory effects on the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress.
