2-Amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine (PhIP) is known to be a carcinogen that is metabolically activated by cytochrome P-450 1A (CYP1A2) and forms PhIP-DNA adducts. 2-Amino-1-methyl-6-phenylimidazo[4,5-b]pyridine has potent estrogenic activity inducing transcription of estrogen (E2)-regulated genes, proliferation of E(2)-dependent cells, up-regulation of progesterone receptor, and stimulation of mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling. It is the most abundant of the mutagenic heterocyclic amines found in cooked meat and fish.
