2,6-Dichlorobenzenesulfonamide is a compound that functions as a sulfonamide antimicrobial agent. It acts by inhibiting the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid by binding to and blocking the activity of the enzyme dihydropteroate synthase. This disruption of the folate synthesis pathway ultimately leads to the inhibition of bacterial growth and reproduction. At the molecular level, 2,6-Dichlorobenzenesulfonamide competes with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) for the active site of dihydropteroate synthase, preventing the formation of dihydrofolic acid.
