2,5-Anhydro-D-mannitol is a carbohydrate metabolism regulator that may act to inhibit gluconeogenesis from lactate plus pyruvate and from substrates that enter the gluconeogenic pathway as triose phosphate. It is a sugar alcohol that is readily absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. It is metabolized in the liver by the enzyme aldose reductase to form 2,5-anhydro-D-mannitol-1-phosphate, which is then converted to D-mannitol-1-phosphate. This compound is then further metabolized to form D-mannitol, which is then excreted in the urine. 2,5-Anhydro-D-mannitol has been used as a model compound for the study of sugar alcohol metabolism, as a substrate for the study of enzyme kinetics, and as a tool for the study of carbohydrate-protein interactions.
