2,4,6-Trimethylphenyl isothiocyanate, derived from isothiocyanates, is an organosulfur compound exhibiting distinct characteristics. This colorless liquid possesses a potent, pungent odor. Notably, 2,4,6-Trimethylphenyl isothiocyanate displays enzymatic activity, facilitating the breakdown of proteins, peptides, and other macromolecules. Through the cleavage of peptide bonds between amino acids, it effectively breaks down these macromolecules into smaller fragments. Additionally, it has the ability to form covalent bonds with proteins and peptides, leading to the creation of new macromolecules. It can be used as a catalyst, and an intermediate in dye production. When combined with dimethyldioxirane, it yields diphenylphosphine acid, which, upon reacting with choline, generates sulfines. These sulfines then undergo hydrogenation to yield the desired product. Furthermore, 2,4,6-Trimethylphenyl isothiocyanate acts as a catalyst in the reaction between sulfur and hydrogen gas at high temperatures, producing hydrogen sulfide gas.
