2,4,6,8-Tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane is thought to function as both a surfactant and a lubricant. As a surfactant, it decreases the surface tension of a solution by creating a thin layer of molecules on the surface. This molecular layer acts as a protective barrier, preventing the molecules in the solution from interacting with the surface. Furthermore, as a lubricant, 2,4,6,8-Tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane reduces friction between surfaces, facilitating smoother movement.
