2,3-Diphospho-D-glyceric acid pentasodium salt (2,3-DPG) is a useful intermediate in the synthesis of nucleotides and amino acids. It is also used in the laboratory as a substrate for enzyme assays, as a buffer for biochemical reactions, and as a cofactor for enzymes. Additionally, 2,3-Diphospho-D-glyceric acid pentasodium salt is involved in the regulation of oxygen transport.
