1H-Benzotriazole-1-methanol is a safe reagent for generation of anhydrous formaldehyde in organic solvents. It is a useful catalyst for the hydrolysis of phenyl esters of alpha-furoic acid. It is also used as a reactive oxygen scavenger. A potentially useful corrosion inhibitor of iron in acidic media that has been exposed to oxygen and air.
