17-PA is a steroid analog that demonstrates selective antagonism of neurosteroid potentiation of GABA responses. 17-PA is demonstrated to antagonize both the response augmentation and the direct gating of GABA receptors by 5α-reduced potentiating steroids. This effect of 17-PA was shown to be selective for 5α-reduced potentiating steroids, as 5β-reduced potentiators were only weakly affected.
