10-(3-Sulfopropyl)acridinium betaine is a standard for the determination of lifetimes of fluorescent molecules. It is also used to determine various species by fluorescence quenching and has been studied as a chloride-sensitive fluorescent indicator. In addition, it is an anionic surfactant and acts as a stabilizer for proteins and other biological molecules. Moreover, 10-(3-Sulfopropyl)acridinium betaine is used to improve the performance of enzymes in biocatalysis, and as a reagent in the synthesis of organic compounds. Furthermore, it reduces the denaturation of proteins and increases the permeability of cell membranes.
