A phospholipid biosynthetic precursor of platelet-activating factor (PAF). Platelet-activating factor (PAF) is a pro-inflammatory lipid mediator that activates many cell types including leukocytes, platelets and vascular endothelial cells in response to cutaneous inflammation. PAF is produced by two distinct enzymatic pathways. One remodeling route involves structural modification of a membrane phospholipid (1-alkyl-2-acyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine). 1-O-Hexadecyl-2-O-arachidonoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphorylcholine has been used to examine substrate dependence and the effect on deacylation of alkylarachidonoyl-GPC by platelet phospholipase A2.
