1,7-Phenanthroline is a phenanthrene aza-analog. In the presence of a rat liver S9 fraction, 1,7-Phenanthroline was found to be mutagenic in the Ames test using Salmonella typhimurium TA100. In vitro, it has shown to be an effective inhibitor of polymerase chain reaction. It is also used as a chelating agent, making it useful for various scientific applications.
