1,4-Difluoroanthraquinone is a synthetic compound that has shown to have anticancer properties. By binding to the ribosomal RNA within cancer cells, it inhibits protein synthesis, and ultimately leading to cell death. The synthesis of 1,4-Difluoroanthraquinone involved a tricycle reaction utilizing alkylation and an asymmetric synthesis method. Initially, an oxidative coupling reaction was used to generate an enol ether intermediate. This intermediate was then reacted with propiolic acid, catalyzed by copper(II) chloride in ethanol at -78°C, resulting in the desired product formation. Notably, 1,4-Difluoroanthraquinone has shown inhibitory activity against the enzyme glutathione S-transferase (GST), which plays a role in the detoxification of foreign substances. By inhibiting GST, 1,4-Difluoroanthraquinone reduces the toxic effects of certain compounds. This compound exhibits antioxidant properties by scavenging free radicals and preventing oxidative damage.
