1,1-Methanediyl Bismethanethiosulfonate (MBTS) is a sulfhydryl cross-linking reagent. It is primarily used as an intermediate in the synthesis of peptides, proteins, dyes, pesticides, and organic compounds. It is also used as a rubber accelerator and as a curing agent for rubber vulcanization. 1,1-Methanediyl Bismethanethiosulfonate can act as a Lewis base, nucleophile, catalyst, scavenger, or oxidizing agent. Research has demonstrated its inhibitory effects on the growth of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. It has also exhibited the ability to decrease the activity of specific enzymes like proteases and lipases. Furthermore, 1,1-Methanediyl Bismethanethiosulfonate has been observed to possess anti-inflammatory properties, resulting in the reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokine production.
