δ-CEHC is a major beta-oxidation metabolite of δ-tocopherol. About 50% of 3H-δ-tocopherol given as an intraperitoneal dose in rat models is recovered in the urine as δ-CEHC, indicating that this is the major route of metabolism. δ-CEHC is believed to function as an antioxidant, neutralizing free radicals and averting oxidative damage. Additionally, it is speculated to restrain the activity of specific enzymes, like cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase, both of which play roles in the inflammatory process.
