Benzylpenicillin diethylaminoethyl ester hydroiodide is a potent broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria by inhibiting protein synthesis. It may act to exhibit antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus species, including Streptococcus pneumoniae, Streptococcus pyogenes, and Streptococcus viridans. Benzylpenicillin diethylaminoethyl ester hydroiodide binds to the 50S ribosome subunit of bacteria and prevents the formation of an antibiotic-inhibitor complex with the enzyme cell wall synthesis that is required for cell wall biosynthesis. This binding prevents cell division.
