Urea can be used as a detergent, similar to guanidine hydrochloride (sc-202637), to denature proteins at high concentrations, or in cell culture to increase the osmolarity. Transformed microorganisms often produce inclusion bodies, which are insoluble, inactive bodies, that form during recombinant protein production. These inclusion bodies can be denatured with urea or guanidine hydrochloride. The compound prefers to interacts with non-polar and aromatic sides, and can be used in polyacrylamide gels containing urea to fractionate low molecular weight DNA or RNA.
