Simetryn is a selective herbicide belonging to the triazine family that is widely used to control weeds in crops such as corn, soybeans, and sugarcane. Simetryn has a unique mode of action that inhibits photosynthesis in the target plants, thereby preventing their growth and development. It acts as a photosystem II inhibitor, which means that it blocks the transfer of electrons from water to plastoquinone in the light-dependent reactions of photosynthesis. This results in the accumulation of reactive oxygen species, which can cause damage to the photosynthetic apparatus and ultimately lead to plant death. Simetryn is highly selective in its mode of action, targeting only broadleaf weeds and leaving grasses unaffected. It can inhibit chlorophyll synthesis, reduce photosynthetic efficiency, and disrupt membrane integrity. Simetryn can also affect the uptake and transport of nutrients, leading to nutrient deficiencies and reduced growth. In addition, Simetryn can induce oxidative stress and damage DNA, which can lead to cell death.
