(S)-MCPG is an antagonist of the group I/II metabotropic glutamate receptors (mGluR) and is the active isomer of (RS)-MCPG (sc-202325) preparations. Perturbation of the group I/II mGluR (mGluR-1a, mGluR-2, mGluR-3, mGluR-5) by (S)-MCPG has been used to assess the function of mGluRs in spatial learning, demonstrating that a particular subset of spatial learning tasks are correlated with MCPG-sensitive mGluRs while NMDA receptors are shown to play an integral role in all spatial learning. (S)-MCPG is also described to block induction of long-term potentiation through interaction with the mGluRs.
