Hematin is an iron-containing porphyrin that was used in a study to test in vitro activities of the Rx-01 oxazolidinones against hospital and community pathogens. Hematin forms when heme is oxidized, typically involving the iron present in the heme changing from a ferrous (Fe^2+) to a ferric (Fe^3+) state. The iron in hematin is in the ferric (Fe^3+) oxidation state, which affects its ability to bind oxygen and other ligands compared to the ferrous iron in heme. This state makes hematin unable to bind oxygen, differentiating it from heme in functional hemoglobin. It was also used in a study to test in-vitro bacterial identification using fluorescence spectroscopy with an optical fiber system.
