QUICK LINKS

α-Ribavirin (Ribavirin Impurity B) functions as an inhibitor of inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH), an enzyme involved in the de novo synthesis of guanine nucleotides. By inhibiting IMPDH, α-Ribavirin disrupts the production of guanine nucleotides, leading to a decrease in the levels of guanosine triphosphate (GTP) within the cell. This disruption in nucleotide synthesis can interfere with viral replication, as GTP works with the synthesis of viral RNA. α-Ribavirin have immunomodulatory effects, potentially enhancing the host′s immune response to viral infections. These combined mechanisms of action make α-Ribavirin useful for studying the molecular pathways involved in viral replication .
