(S)-3,5-DHPG, also known as (S)-3,5-Dihydroxylphenylglycine, a neurotransmitter abundantly present in the brain, acts as a potent phosphodiesterase inhibitor. By blocking the enzyme phosphodiesterase, it elevates cyclic AMP (cAMP) levels within neurons. This amplifies neuronal activity and exhibits neuroprotective properties. Moreover, (S)-3,5-DHPG demonstrates shielding effects against glutamate toxicity and disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential caused by 2-aminoethoxydiphenyl borate (2APB). It also safeguards fetal bovine erythrocytes from damage induced by calcium ionophore A23187-activated cAMP levels. Additionally, the compound reduces platelet aggregation and mitigates neuronal death triggered by constant pressure or oxygen deprivation. (S)-3,5-DHPG is a selective group I mGlu receptor agonist. mGluR (Metabotropic glutamate receptors) are divided into three groups, group I, group II, and group III. Group I (mGluR-1 and mGluR-5) receptors are coupled to Gq/11 and are activators of phospholipase C.
