NP-40 Alternative is a nonionic surfactant used in biochemistry and molecular biology for its ability to solubilize membrane proteins and to break down protein complexes. This compound is often employed as a milder substitute for the traditional Nonidet P-40. NP-40 Alternative is particularly useful in the preparation of cell lysates, where it helps to preserve the integrity of protein interactions, and in the isolation of nuclei and membrane-bound organelles. It is also a common component in buffer solutions for immunoprecipitation and for the lysis of cells in various protein purification protocols. In addition, NP-40 Alternative is used in assays that require the permeabilization of cell membranes to allow for the entry of reagents or to release cytosolic contents for analysis.
