Deoxycholic acid is a bile acid that may affect cellular signaling and gene expression. It has been used to study assess how physiological concentrations of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) vs. deoxycholic acid (DCA) affect barrier function in mouse intestinal tissue. Deoxycholic acid plays a role in activating the G protein-coupled bile acid receptor TGR5, which in turn triggers thermogenic activity in brown adipose tissue (BAT).
