Amifostine Thiol Dihydrochloride is a metabolite of Amifostine.Amifostine is a dihydrochloride compound containing a thiol group, which is utilized to safeguard normal tissues from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation. Acting as an antioxidant, it exhibits potential protective properties against radiation-induced damage. Amifostine has demonstrated effectiveness in optimizing tissue culture, as well as protecting muscle and intestinal cells from radiation. In vitro studies, amifostine may act to activate DNA repair enzymes, resulting in increased DNA and RNA synthesis. Furthermore, its active metabolite has been observed to impede bacterial growth by binding to ribosomes and inhibiting protein synthesis.
