1,10-Phenanthroline-5,6-dione is a bifunctional quinone oxidant which, when used in conjunction with Zn2+ catalysts, is used to affect the aerobic oxidation of secondary amines to a variety of value added motifs, including indoles. It is used in the synthesis of dyes, catalysts, and other organic compounds, such as quinones, amides, and lactones. Also, it acts as a chelating agent. Furthermore, 1,10-Phenanthroline-5,6-dione has been used to enhance the solubility of certain compounds, as well as to stabilize proteins and other biomolecules. In addition, it can be utilized to detect the presence of metal ions, and it is used in the synthesis of polymers-based nanomaterials. Finally, it can be employed as an antioxidant to protect against oxidative damage.
