Isobutyryl-L-carnitine (IBC) is a naturally occurring, non-proteinogenic, short-chain acyl-carnitine present in human and animal tissues. It plays a role in the carnitine shuttle system that enables the transportation of fatty acids into the mitochondria for energy generation. Moreover, it participates in the regulation of glucose and fatty acid metabolism. Recent extensive studies have highlighted the health benefits and therapeutic potential of Isobutyryl-L-carnitine. Isobutyryl-L-carnitine acts as a substrate for acyl-CoA synthetase and acyl-CoA transferase enzymes, which are for fatty acid metabolism. It also inhibits the activity of carnitine palmitoyltransferase I, an enzyme that regulates fatty acid oxidation.
