ABAT Antibody (B-5) is a mouse monoclonal IgG1 antibody that detects ABAT in mouse, rat, and human samples through applications such as western blotting (WB), immunoprecipitation (IP), immunofluorescence (IF), and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Anti-ABAT antibody (B-5) recognizes ABAT, a crucial mitochondrial matrix protein that plays a significant role in the metabolism of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter in the central nervous system. By catalyzing the conversion of GABA into succinic semialdehyde, ABAT helps regulate GABA levels, which is vital for maintaining neuronal excitability and preventing excessive neuronal firing. Proper functioning of ABAT is essential, as deficiencies can lead to GABA-AT deficiency, a condition associated with severe neurological symptoms such as hypotonia, hyperreflexia, and refractory seizures. ABAT exists as a homodimer and requires pyridoxal phosphate as a cofactor for enzymatic activity, highlighting the importance of cofactor availability in metabolic processes. ABAT is expressed in various tissues, including the liver, brain, pancreas, kidney, placenta, and heart, indicating widespread physiological relevance. The gene encoding ABAT is located on human chromosome 16p13.2, and understanding ABAT function and interactions is crucial for elucidating the underlying mechanisms of neurological disorders.
