Gentamicin sulfate is a powerful broad-spectrum antibiotic that exhibits minimal toxicity to viruses and mammalian cells even at antibacterial concentrations. It effectively inhibits the growth of both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as mycoplasma. This antibiotic exerts its action by binding to the L6 protein of the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby impeding normal protein synthesis. Notably, it is particularly valuable in Baculovirus expression systems due to its ability to overcome mutations in rplF that render other antibiotics ineffective. Comprised of various gentamicin components, gentamicin sulfate is classified as an aminoglycoside antibiotic. The primary constituents, namely gentamicin C1, gentamicin C1a, and gentamicin C2, make up approximately 80% of gentamicin and exhibit the highest antibacterial potency. The remaining 20% is comprised of gentamicin A, B, X, and a few others, which possess comparatively lower antibiotic activity when compared to the gentamicin C complex. Gentamicin displays a slight solubility in aqueous solutions, with a concentration of approximately 12.6 mg/mL.
