Detomidine HCl is a nonnarcotic, synthetic α2-AR (α-2 adrenoreceptor) agonist. α2-AR (α2-adrenergic receptor) agonists produce dose-dependent sedative and analgesic effects, mediatated by activation of α-2 catecholamine receptors, thus inducing a negative feedback response, reducing production of excitatory neurotransmitters.
