Amlodipine besylate is an L-type calcium channel protein inhibitor and blocker. It is noted for its role in chemical studies related to the regulation of calcium ion influx across cell membranes. This regulation is for the function of muscle cells. The compound′s ability to bind to and inhibit L-type calcium channels in the cellular membrane makes it useful for studies aimed at elucidating the physiological and pathological processes associated with calcium ion dysregulation. Amlodipine besylate may act to inhibit proliferation of human vascular smooth muscle cells and epidermoid carcinoma A431 cells (IC50 = 25 muM).
