N-Methyl-D-Aspartat (NMDA)-Rezeptoren sind Ca2+-durchlässige ligandengesteuerte Kanäle des zentralen Nervensystems, die nach Bindung der Co-Agonisten Glutamat und Glycin aktiviert werden. Bei dieser Chemikalie handelt es sich um ein Propanolamin, das die NR2B-Untereinheit der NMDA-Rezeptoren potent, selektiv und nicht-kompetitiv antagonisiert (IC50 = 50 nM). Es hemmt nicht die NR1-, NR2A-, NR2C- und NR2D-Untereinheiten und hat keine signifikanten Auswirkungen auf α-Amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolpropioinsäure (AMPA)- oder Kainatrezeptoren. Diese Verbindung ist neuroprotektiv, da sie die NMDA-ausgelöste Freisetzung von Laktatdehydrogenase aus kultivierten kortikalen Neuronen verhindert. Außerdem verringert sie bei intraperitonealer Verabreichung das Hirninfarktvolumen nach vorübergehender Ischämie durch Karotisarterienverschluss.
