Cytokeratine sind eine vielfältige Gruppe von intermediären Filamentproteinen (IFPs), die als Paare sowohl in keratinisierten als auch in nicht keratinisierten epithelialen Geweben exprimiert werden. Cytokeratine spielen eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Differenzierung und Gewebespezialisierung und tragen dazu bei, die Gesamtstrukturintegrität epithelialer Zellen aufrechtzuerhalten. Cytokeratine haben sich als nützliche Marker der Gewebedifferenzierung erwiesen, die direkt auf die Charakterisierung maligner Tumoren anwendbar ist. Cytokeratin 5 wird in normalen basalen Zellen exprimiert. Mutationen des Cytokeratin 5-Gens (KRT5) haben sich als Ursache der autosomal dominanten Erkrankung Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) erwiesen.
