QUICK LINKS

1-beta-D-Arabinofuranosylcytosine, a cytosine analogue, inhibits DNA polymerases alpha, delta, and epsilon, and RNA polymerases resulting in suppression of DNA synthesis and repair. 1-beta-D-Arabinofuranosylcytosine acts as an antimetabolic agent which is responsible for damaging DNA during the S-phase of the cell cycle. In addition, 1-beta-D-Arabinofuranosylcytosine inhibits nucleotide reductase enzymes that are needed for DNA synthesis to occur. Alternate studies suggest that 1-beta-D-Arabinofuranosylcytosine is clastogenic to both spermatogonial cells and bone marrow. Furthermore, 1-beta-D-Arabinofuranosylcytosine can be used to control the proliferation of glial cells.
