NKAIN3, or Sodium/potassium-transporting ATPase subunit gamma-interacting protein 3, is a protein that in humans is encoded by the NKAIN3 gene. This protein is a member of the Nkain family, which is known to interact with the sodium/potassium-transporting ATPase (Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase) complex. The Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase complex is a fundamental ion pump found in the plasma membrane of all animal cells and is essential for maintaining the electrochemical gradient across the cell membrane. The exact biological function of NKAIN3 is not fully elucidated, but it is suggested to play a role in the regulation of the Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase activity. By interacting with this ion pump, NKAIN3 might influence cellular processes such as ion homeostasis, neuronal excitability, and muscle contraction, which are all dependent on the proper function of the Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase complex.
NKAIN3 is particularly interesting due to its expression pattern in the nervous system. Its potential involvement in neuronal function suggests that NKAIN3 could be important for neural development, synapse function, and the regulation of neurotransmission. The association between NKAIN3 and the Na⁺/K⁺-ATPase complex indicates that it may be crucial for the maintenance of resting membrane potential and the repolarization phase of action potentials in neurons.Studies have also explored the link between genetic variants of NKAIN3 and neuropsychiatric disorders, suggesting that alterations in NKAIN3 expression or function could be associated with the development of certain conditions, such as schizophrenia. However, the mechanisms by which NKAIN3 contributes to these disorders remain to be clarified.
