Tabanone′s unique composition enables it to act as a growth inhibitor for plants by releasing allelochemical substances that disrupt plant metabolism, including malic acid and other organic acids. Extensive studies have demonstrated the inhibitory effects of Tabanone on the growth of tobacco seedlings in vitro. Furthermore, Tabanone proves to be useful in product research, as it facilitates the measurement of alterations in the fatty acid profiles of plants. Structurally, it is a sesquiterpenoid.
