Allyl disulfide is a colorless, oily liquid that is soluble in ethanol and water but insoluble in non-polar solvents like benzene and toluene. Allyl disulfideis a sulfhydryl and carbonyl reactive heterobifunctional crosslinking reagenty that is useful for preparing immunoconjugates of doxorubicin. Studies show that Allyl disulfide can reduce inflammation by inhibiting NF-κB activation and reducing cytokine production. Moreover, it possesses strong bactericidal properties. This compound serves a variety of purposes, acting as a Cytocrome P450 inhibitor, vasorelaxant, and hypotensive agent. As a glycol ether, Diallyl Disulfide finds applications in cosmetic products.
