γ-Terpinene is a monoterpene found in essential oils, such as tea tree oil, lavender oil, and pine oil. It may act to interact with various cellular targets, including cell membrane proteins, enzymes, and other biomolecules. It can inhibit the activity of enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of essential fatty acids, resulting in decreased inflammation. Additionally, γ-Terpinene interacts with the cell membrane, altering the permeability of the cell and allowing for the passage of certain molecules. In vitro studies have demonstrated that this compound can inhibit the growth of fungi, bacteria, and viruses. Furthermore, it has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antioxidant properties. Lastly, γ-Terpinene is used in laboratory experiments to study the effects of terpenes on cell cultures, enzymes, and other biological systems.
