QUICK LINKS

Asulam functions as a herbicide, targeting specific enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of essential amino acids in plants. It inhibits the activity of acetolactate synthase, an enzyme important for the production of branched-chain amino acids such as valine, leucine, and isoleucine. By disrupting this key metabolic pathway, Asulam interferes with the plant′s ability to synthesize proteins and grow, ultimately leading to its death. At the molecular level, Asulam binds to the active site of acetolactate synthase, preventing the enzyme from catalyzing the formation of amino acids. This disruption in amino acid production impairs the plant′s ability to carry out cellular processes, ultimately leading to its demise. In experimental applications, Asulam′s mechanism of action as a herbicide may be useful for studying plant metabolism and developing strategies for weed control.
