1,7-Dimethylnaphthalene (1,7-DMN) is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) and is a member of the naphthalene family. It is an important solvent in the synthesis of various organic compounds such as dyes, pharmaceuticals, and fragrances. It is known to be a weak mutagen and may act to cause DNA damage in vitro. It is also a weak carcinogen and may act to cause tumors, as well as liver and kidney damage in laboratory animals. In scientific research, 1,7-Dimethylnaphthalene is used as a model compound to study the formation, reactivity, structure, and metabolism of PAHs.
