QUICK LINKS
Sodium mercaptopyruvate is an important mercaptopyruvate pathway intermediate during which cysteine of aspartate transaminase catalyses the transamination from cysteine to mercaptopyruvate and then mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase catalyzes the transsulfuration from mercaptupyruvate to pyruvate. This process works to maintain the cellular redox status. Sodium mercaptopyruvate exists as an equilibrium of its enol and keto form, where the dominant form being the keto (2,5-Dihydroxy-[1,4]dithiane-2,5-dicarboxylate).
