Aluminum chloride is a strong Lewis acid, which means it can react with a wide range of organic and inorganic compounds. It is used in a variety of applications, including as a catalyst, a flame retardant, a corrosion inhibitor, and a reagent in organic synthesis. For example, it can catalyze several reactions, including Friedel-Crafts alkylations, Grignard reactions, and aldol condensations. Aluminum chloride is also used in the production of dyes and fertilizers.
