18α-Glycyrrhetinic acid may exhibit anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor properties. It functions by inhibiting the enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2, which is involved in the metabolism of cortisol. By blocking this enzyme, 18α-Glycyrrhetinic acid increases the levels of cortisol in certain tissues, leading to anti-inflammatory effects. It induces apoptosis in cancer cells by activating caspase-3 and caspase-8, which are key players in the cell death process. 18α-Glycyrrhetinic acid also inhibits the activation of NF-κB, a transcription factor involved in the regulation of genes related to inflammation and cancer.18α-Glycyrrhetinic acid exerts its function by modulating key molecular pathways involved in inflammation and tumorigenesis.
