5-Hydroxy Tryptophan (5-HTP) is a direct 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) precursor that is used to assess central serotonergic function. It is found in a variety of foods and dietary supplements, and is widely used for its purported anxiolytic, antidepressant, and sleep-promoting effects. In addition to its role in the synthesis of serotonin, 5-HTP has been studied for its potential effects in a number of different areas, including obesity, fibromyalgia, and Parkinson′s disease. Furthermore, it can modulate dopamine, norepinephrine, and GABA levels, as well as the stimulate the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis.
