Physcion is a naturally occurring anthraquinone that possesses antifungal and antitumor properties. In addition to its laxative and anti-inflammatory effects, it also inhibits kinases and tyrosinase, and has cytotoxic effects on cancer cells. Physcion has been found to reduce the growth of tumors in mice by inhibiting 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase, which decreases lipogenesis and RNA biosynthesis in cancer cells, leading to decreased cell proliferation.
