Cyanidin chloride is an anthocyanin polyphenolic antioxidant compound with demonstrated cell protectant effects. It demonstrates protection against UV-light-induced lipid peroxdiation and shows a capacity for NO radical and oxygen radical species scavenging, protecting cells against multiple mechanisms of oxidative damage. The high redox activity of Cyanidin chloride also presents a capacity for potentiation of DNA oxidative damage induced by the strong reductant Dithiothreitol (sc-207784). Activity of the activator protein 1 (AP-1) transcription factor is suppressed by Cyanidin chloride and other closely related anthocyanins through blockade of ERK and JNK pathway activation, intervening upon the tumor promotion associated with AP-1 activity in oncogenic states and presenting an antiproliferative activity.
