Chlorothiazide is an inhibitor of carbonic anhydrase and is slightly less potent than acetazolamide (sc-214461). This compound may act to block reabsorption of sodium and chloride ions. Chlorothiazide has been used in a variety of in vitro studies to study its effects on cellular physiology. In cell culture studies, chlorothiazide may act to reduce cell proliferation and induce apoptosis. Its effects diuretics on electrolyte transport, calcium homeostasis, and sodium/potassium pump activity are also studies.
