2-Deoxy-D-galactose is a white crystalline solid, soluble in water and polar organic solvents but insoluble in nonpolar solvents. This substance is an aldopentose, signifying it contains an aldehyde group along with five carbon atoms. It is a metabolite of the carbohydrate galactose. 2-Deoxy-D-galactose undergoes oxidation and reduction reactions and has the ability to establish glycosidic bonds with other sugars. It is used in various scientific applications, such as studies exploring DNA damage and repair mechanisms, examining antioxidant capacities, and investigating cellular death processes. 2-Deoxy-D-galactose is an analog of hexose that can be incorporated into rat gangliosides GM2 and GD3 in positions that are usually occupied by galactose. 2-Deoxy-D-galactose has been observed to inhibit fucosylation.
