Fipronil is a channel blocker that blocks GABA-gated chloride channels and glutamate-activated chloride channels (GluCls). In Xenopus oocyte studies fipronil blocked the response of GABA receptors. Research shows that fipronil can increase levels of apoptosis in PC-12 cells. The binding of 4-n-[3H]propyl-4#39-ethynylbicycloorthobenzoate ([3H]EBOB) to the GABA-gated chloride ion channel is inhibited by fipronil in Drosophila melanogaster.
